You don’t need character to be a leader.
You read it right. Character, simply put is who you are when no one’s looking. In his book Next Generation Leader, Andy Stanley makes a point that is..well, a really good point: “You don’t need character to be a leader“. At first glance it doesn’t make a lot of sense but it’s the truth. There have been leaders throughout history who have led armies, organizations and even churches with devoted followers but definitely lacked character. So you don’t really need character to be a leader, but it is absolutely essential if you want to be a leader worth following.
Who you are in private reflects on who you attempt to be in public. If you want to be a leader worth following or just excel in your arena of life, strive to be a person of excellent character. When man looks on the outside, God looks at the heart.
Character keeps us, courage propels us. In order for a person of good character to excel, courage plays a pretty important role. Courage is what transforms a vision to reality. A house will remain a blueprint till the first brick is laid. In order to achieve your God-given potential, you need courage to take that first step. Courage is what propels you beyond failure. No one succeeds without failing. Success is all about having the courage to try “one more time”. Legend has it that Colonel Sanders (of the KFC fame for you less informed ones) was rejected 1009 times before his recipe was accepted. Can you imagine the world if he gave up after his 1008th attempt? Tragedy avoided.
If you want to succeed, summon the courage to give it another shot. That “one more” attempt could be what propels your ministry, marriage, weight loss, career or future. Remember: character counts, courage carries.
